And so on. Once you begin to practice this, you will find that you lose the fear of sounding ignorant to someone, because you are able to enter into fun and mutually fulfilling conversations that build your rapport and understanding with your new friend. Each subsequent time you connect, you can get to know more detail and can ask insightful questions about his or her success at work. “How have you been, Todd? I just read in the Financial Times that bond prices have been erratic; this must be affecting your business in some way, right? . . . You were working on a big new account when I last saw you, did you land it? . . . So what are you working on next? And what do you think the Fed is going to do next about interest rates?”
There is another hidden benefit of this approach: you become more knowledgeable and interesting to other people based on all the fascinating things you are learning from your new friends, and you never know where the knowledge you glean could come in handy later on. Based on conversations I have had with new friends in just the last week or two, I could now tell you about the regulations governing the import of wine, how large diamonds are bought by wholesalers (a monthly payment of $50 million for a nonnegotiable box of assorted rough stones), the exercises that can suppress cold symptoms (light resistance training), the debate over the cognitive benefits of writing versus typing in childhood development (pro-writing studies have been funded by the pencil industry), and how to kite surf (hold on to your ass).
But if we have just met, I won’t tell you any of this; I’m only going to ask you about you.
